How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

Although regular dental care at home is recommended (brushing, flossing, gargling, etc.), it takes a dental hygienist to remove some of the hardened plaque and tartar.

Generally, having at least two cleaning appointments per year is recommended. If plaque buildup, gum disease, or signs of oral cancer are detected, patients may be advised to schedule more frequent appointments.

Teeth Cleaning Procedure

1

Oral Examination

One of our dentists or dental hygienists will check your gums, teeth, and soft tissues for signs of decay, gum disease, swelling, or oral cancer. X-rays may be taken if needed.

2

Dental Scaling

Plaque and tartar are carefully removed from your teeth using specialized tools. This ensures more thorough cleaning than what is possible with at-home tools.

3

Polishing Teeth

Your teeth are polished to remove surface stains and smooth enamel, leaving your smile looking refreshed.

4

Preventative Treatment

Depending on your needs, fluoride may be applied to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities. Dental sealants may also be discussed, especially for children or cavity-prone patients.

5

Oral Hygiene Guidance

Your hygienist will review proper brushing and flossing techniques, discuss nutrition, and provide tips specific to your oral health needs.

Benefits of Regular Dental Cleaning Gum

Prevent Gum Disease

Professional cleanings help to remove plaque and tartar that irritate gums and lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Prevent Cavities & Tooth Decay

Plaque buildup wears away tooth enamel and causes decay. Regular cleanings reduce the risk of cavities and tooth loss.

Freshen Breath

Removing bacteria-containing plaque helps eliminate the source of persistent bad breath.

Brighten Your Smile

Polishing teeth removes surface stains caused by coffee, wine, or tobacco, giving your teeth a whiter appearance.

Support Overall Health

Research suggests links between oral health and systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Regular cleanings support overall oral health.

Save Money on Future Treatments

Regular tooth cleanings help to prevent problems from developing. This is far less costly than treating advanced gum disease, tooth loss, or restorative procedures later.

Preventing Tooth Decay & Loss

Tooth decay and gum disease are major contributors to tooth loss, but they’re largely preventable. Along with professional cleanings, you can protect your teeth by:

  • Brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Flossing once a day to remove food and plaque between teeth.
  • Eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks.
  • Attending regular checkups to stay ahead of potential issues.

Most people benefit from a professional cleaning every six months, though your dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings if you have gum disease or other dental concerns.

A professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar buildup, polishes your teeth, and may include a fluoride treatment. Your dentist or hygienist will also check for early signs of cavities or gum issues.

Teeth cleaning is generally painless, though some patients may feel slight sensitivity, especially if there is gum inflammation or tartar buildup. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and good oral care after cleaning can help.
Yes. Regular cleanings remove harmful plaque and tartar that brushing alone cannot reach, reducing the risk of cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis.
A standard cleaning usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the amount of plaque and tartar, as well as any additional assessments your dentist performs.
