Root Canals

Endodontic Therapy, also referred to as Root Canal Therapy, is a procedure in which teeth that are decayed (have deep cavities) or have experienced trauma are treated by removing the infected or inflamed nerve.

Root Canal Therapy

The root canal treatment is used to help restore the tooth to pain-free health. A root canal is usually performed in one appointment and involves cleaning and shaping the canals in the root (the area that houses the nerve) to seal them off so no bacteria can enter. Once completed, the tooth will require a filling and/or a crown.

Root Canal Procedure

1

Examination of Infection

X-rays and clinical assessment are performed to evaluate the affected tooth.

2

Applying Anesthesia

Local anesthesia ensures the procedure is pain-free. Your dentist will speak to you about other sedation options if they are required.

3

Accessing the Pulp

A small opening is made through the crown of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber, the area where the infection develops.

4

Cleaning and Shaping Canal

The infected pulp is removed, the canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. Medications may be prescribed to eliminate bacteria and prevent reinfection.

5

Permanent Restoration

A dental crown is typically applied to protect and strengthen the tooth, preventing future damage and reinfection.

When to Consider a Root Canal

You should consider receiving endodontic therapy if there’s:

  • Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums around the affected tooth
  • Discolouration or darkening of a tooth
  • Nerve injury due to trauma or prior dental work

If left untreated, an infection can worsen, leading to dental abscess formation, jawbone damage, or the spread of bacteria to surrounding teeth. Prompt treatment by a root canal specialist is crucial to preserving your natural tooth and overall oral health.

  • Diet: Avoid hard foods on the treated tooth and maintain a balanced diet low in sugar.
  • Follow-Up Visits: Attend all scheduled checkups to monitor healing and restoration integrity.

A root canal is a dental treatment used to save a tooth that has become badly infected or damaged inside.

Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If this pulp becomes infected—often due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma—it can cause pain, swelling, or sensitivity.

During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent further infection. In most cases, a crown is placed afterwards to restore strength and function.

You might need a root canal if you have:

  • Persistent toothache or throbbing pain
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that doesn’t go away
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • A deep cavity or cracked tooth

The goal is to relieve pain and save the natural tooth rather than extracting it.

A root canal procedure is performed with local anaesthesia to help keep you comfortable during treatment. Many patients experience relief from the discomfort caused by an infected tooth after the procedure. Some mild sensitivity or soreness may occur for a few days as the tooth heals.

The length of a root canal treatment depends on the condition of the tooth and the complexity of the root canals. Most procedures can be completed in one or two appointments. Your dentist will assess your tooth and provide a more accurate timeline based on your individual needs.

After a root canal, follow your dentist’s instructions for caring for your tooth. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your final restoration is placed, maintain good oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing, and attend any recommended follow-up appointments. A dental crown may be recommended to help protect and strengthen the tooth.

A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment can last many years with proper care. However, in some cases, a tooth may become reinfected due to factors such as new decay, a damaged restoration, or untreated areas within the root canal system. Regular dental check-ups can help monitor the health of the treated tooth.
