Orthodontics

Orthodontics is used to straighten teeth, correct malocclusions (bad bites), and treat TMJ disorders. Traditional orthodontics (braces) utilize brackets bonded to the teeth and a series of wires held by elastics which are used to straighten the teeth and correct the bite.

Braces

Traditional braces are often an efficient option for many alignment concerns. Regular brushing and flossing, as well as maintaining regular cleaning appointments, is especially important when undergoing traditional orthodontics to ensure the health of your teeth and to avoid the need for restorative procedures.

Invisalign

Invisalign utilizes a series of clear, removable aligners (retainers), as opposed to wires, to align the teeth. Appointments are roughly every 4-6 weeks until treatment is complete, and new retainers are delivered at every appointment. While the retainers are removable, successful treatment is dependent on the retainers being worn 22-24 hours a day. Invisalign treatment is highly aesthetic as the retainers are nearly invisible and their removability allows easy access for oral hygiene and maintenance.

Types of Braces

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces function similarly to traditional braces but use a built-in clip instead of elastics to hold the wire. This reduces friction and the amount of pressure on the teeth, often allowing for faster adjustments and fewer appointments. Self-ligating braces are available in metal, ceramic, or clear options and are ideal for patients looking for efficiency and comfort without compromising results.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays that gradually straighten teeth. They are comfortable, nearly invisible, and make maintaining oral hygiene easier compared to traditional braces. Clear aligners are suitable for mild to moderate orthodontic concerns and are particularly popular among adults and teens who want a flexible, aesthetic option.

Traditional Braces

Still one of the most reliable methods, traditional braces work well for a wide range of orthodontic needs. They provide precise control over complex tooth movements and bite corrections and are suitable for patients of all ages who are committed to following the care routine required for braces.

Orthodontic treatment can begin as early as age 7 for evaluation purposes, but braces or aligners are typically placed in the pre-teen or teen years. Adults can also benefit from treatment at any age.

Some mild discomfort or pressure may occur, especially after adjustments, but it is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of the case. Most patients complete treatment within 12–24 months.

Aligners can be removed for meals, while braces require avoiding hard or sticky foods. Both allow for normal nutrition with minor adjustments.

Brush after every meal if possible, using a soft or electric toothbrush to clean carefully around brackets or aligners. Floss daily using floss threaders, interdental brushes, or a water flosser to remove food and plaque between teeth. Avoid hard, sticky, or very crunchy foods that can damage braces or get stuck. If using aligners, remove them before eating and wear them for the recommended 20–22 hours per day. Regular dental check-ups are also important to monitor your progress and oral health.
