Dental Check Up

Dental health encompasses many positive health habits. We encourage patients to not only come in for regular check ups, but also be mindful of their diet and at-home oral hygiene.

Regular Dental Check Ups

Regular dental check up is an essential part of any preventive program for your entire family. If you see your dentist regularly, any dental problems, such as gum disease, can be treated early. If you see a dentist only in an emergency, treatment may be much more costly. Nothing is more economical than regular dental exams.

During a routine dental check up and cleaning, your dentist can:

  • Remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing alone cannot eliminate.
  • Detect early signs of cavities, gum disease, or other oral health issues.
  • Evaluate your bite, jaw, and overall oral structure.
  • Perform X-rays if needed to monitor tooth development or detect hidden problems.

Early identification and treatment of oral health problems can prevent more invasive procedures and keep your mouth healthier.

Healthy Habits for Strong Teeth

Oral health is influenced by diet, hydration, and lifestyle choices:

Nutrition: Eat a balanced diet rich in calcium, whole grains, lean protein, fruits, and vegetables. Limit sugary foods and drinks, including sodas, juices, candy, and pastries.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water to maintain saliva flow, which helps wash away food debris and neutralize acids.

Snacking: Eat foods as part of meals rather than frequent snacks to reduce acid attacks on teeth. Healthy snack options include cheese, fruits, and vegetables.

Lifestyle: Avoid tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, and stay physically active to support overall health.

Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits

Flossing

  • Take a piece of floss approximately as long as your arm
  • Wrap it around your middle finger of both hands
  • Use your index fingers to glide the floss between your teeth
  • Wrap it into a “C” shape around the bone of the tooth
  • Move up and down 2-3 times to clean
  • Be sure to floss both sides of the tooth
  • Move to a new part of the floss as you move from one tooth to the next
  • Floss first then brush for a better cleaning

Proper Brushing Techniques

Remember to use a soft bristle brush.

  • Place your brush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth pointing towards the gum line.
  • Brush in a gentle circular motion – DO NOT SCRUB!
  • Clean every surface of every tooth and remember to brush your tongue.
  • Change your tooth brush every 3 months on average.

Monitoring Your Dental Health

Regular self-checks can help you catch problems early:

  • Look for bleeding, red, or swollen gums, which are signs of gum disease.
  • Check for loose, cracked, or discoloured teeth.
  • Observe for persistent bad breath or pain while chewing.
  • Monitor wisdom teeth as they emerge (usually between ages 17–21). Improperly positioned wisdom teeth can trap food and bacteria, potentially causing infections.

If you are ever unsure about a potential oral health issue, it is best to contact your dental healthcare provider and make an appointment to get an examination.

Oral Health and Overall Health

Poor oral health can affect more than just your mouth. Gum disease and untreated cavities are linked to cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, diabetes complications, and risks during pregnancy. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is an investment in your overall well-being.
